It is the one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in Turkish and Syrian history at 7.8m.
It occurred 21 miles west of the city of Gaziantep causing widespread damage and many fatalities in the region.
The earthquake was followed by numerous aftershocks. At least 37,000 were reported dead.
